Greek food is one of our favourite types of cuisine and even in the best Greek restaurants outside of Greece, it’s hard to beat Greek food served in Greece. Whether it’s the fresh ingredients grown under the Greek sun, the love and care that’s taken when preparing dishes or the atmosphere of dining out in Greece, we’re not sure, but all we know is that we love Greek food! One thing is for sure when visiting Greece, there is never a shortage of great Greek food and generally at very reasonable prices. Alongside traditional Greek dishes, many restaurants in Crete serve Cretan dishes which are local to Crete and use local ingredients grown on the island. Within the beautiful city of Chania, there are lots of superb restaurants serving Cretan and Greek food as well as international food. While there are some more touristy restaurant choices, the standard of restaurants in Chania, Crete is generally quite high and a great meal is never more than a few minutes away. There is a great selection of things to do in Chania but one of the best is eating and drinking! Tamam Restaurant

Located in the heart of Chania Old Town, down a beautiful small street, Tamam is one of the best restaurants in Chania and is very popular with both locals and tourists. The restaurant has been operating for 3 decades and has seating outdoors on the path and indoors, in a 15th-century Venetian building, so either setting is great. Their menu focuses on traditional Greek, Cretan and Turkish food and features some very unique dishes that are hard to find in other restaurants in Chania. All of the food is incredible and very reasonably priced so you can visit multiple times to try more!

The Five Restaurant
($$) Greek | Cretan | Mediterranean | International
One of many seafood restaurants located along the Neo Chora promenade, The Five Restaurant stands out for its menu that features Mediterranean and Greek cuisine with a twist. The menu includes local ingredients in creative dishes that deliver big on flavour and are reasonably priced. If you’re looking for something a little different then this is one of the best restaurants in Chania to try. We recommend sitting outside if possible to appreciate the views over the beach and sea.

Kritamon Wine Restaurant
($$) Greek | European | Mediterranean
Highly rated and located in the centre of Chania Old Town, Kritamon Wine is an excellent choice for traditional Greek food. While the menu features traditional Greek meze and main dishes, there are also some more hard-to-find dishes on the menu including pork in the pot, and a good range of seafood and risotto options. Seating is in an outdoor courtyard which coupled with the attentive service makes for a great meal out.

Perperas
($) Greek | Cretan | Traditional
Perperas is a traditional Greek meze restaurant that is tucked away behind the main streets of the harbour and old town. Seating is in an outdoor courtyard with vine-covered sections. The menu features many classic Greek meze dishes and a few unusual ones and is exceptionally reasonably priced. Service is friendly and the food is delicious which makes Perperas one of the best restaurants in Chania for a traditional Greek experience.

Salis

With a beautiful restaurant located right on Chania’s Venetian Harbour, it would be easy to think that Salis might be a tourist trap, but it’s far from it. This excellent restaurant serves up creative Greek and Italian cuisine in a warm, buzzing atmosphere. Come here for great service, and delicious dishes that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere in Chania.

Glossitses
($$) Greek | Cretan | Seafood | Traditional
Situated along the Venetian Harbour in Chania, Glossitses isn’t serving up anything new but it does offer reasonably priced Greek dishes with a great view over the harbour. The menu is more fish focused with a section for meat dishes. Try the sardines or calamares with a Greek salad for a light lunch with a view.

Boheme
($$) Mediterranean | International | Fusion | Drinks | Brunch
Hidden away through an arch in Chania Old Town, Boheme specialises in Mediterranean fusion cuisine and has an interesting menu of meze and main dishes with a creative touch. A beautiful courtyard with a bar makes spending the evening here a treat, as does the extensive cocktail and drinks menu. Boheme also has an amazing brunch menu so if you can’t make it for dinner, stop by for brunch which includes steamed buns, burgers, pancakes and eggs.

Oasis
($) Fast Food | Greek | Gyros
Located off the beaten track, in the newer part of Chania town, Oasis isn’t a restaurant but it is a local favourite for gyros. With just a counter on the street, Oasis serves up just one thing, pork gyros and has been for 55 years. The gyros aren’t the biggest but they’re tasty and for only €2.50 ($2.50) per gyros, there is no excuse not to sample the most popular street food in Greece.

Thraka
($) Fast Food | Greek | Meat | Grill
While many locals in Chania recommend Oasis for gyros, many will also recommend Thraka. Located along the main shopping street in the newer part of town, Thraka serves up more than just standard gyros, they have various bread options and a whole host of meat dishes and burgers. The gyros are fractionally more expensive than Oasis but slightly larger. We recommend trying both to see which you prefer.

Kaffeine New Country
($) Coffee | Pastries | Sandwiches
This one isn’t a restaurant but we thought it would be useful to let you know where you can get your coffee fix in Chania. Kaffeine is situated in the new town area of Chania between the main shopping street and Neo Chora. The coffee shop is a small, well-designed shop with a few seats and counter service. They do a large selection of coffee, hot drinks and soft drinks as well as some pastries and sandwiches.

Cretan Bakery (A Few Shops Down From Kaffeine)
When in Greece you must have lots of amazing bread and pastries, just as the Greeks do. There are bakeries on every corner in Greece selling fresh bread, pastries for all occasions and sweet treats, and this particular bakery was one of our favourites. It’s located just a few shops down from Kaffeine New Country and is perfect for grabbing breakfast or lunch on the go, or a snack!
