How to get to Croatia
Flights – Croatia has risen in popularity as a European tourist destination over the last decade, and flights in and out of the country have increased substantially. The national carrier, Croatia Airlines, operates flights to and from many European countries including the UK, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. They also operate the majority of internal flights in Croatia, connecting some of the most major airports. Budget airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair and Wizz Air also operate flights to many of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. We recommend using Skyscanner for checking and booking flights. You can use tools such as the flight tracker to track the price of a flight and book it at its cheapest, a big help for any avid travellers!
Trains – The train network within Croatia is not very good, to say the least. However, international trains from European cities do operate in and out of the country, via the main train station in Zagreb, Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor. Daily trains run from Zagreb to destinations including Serbia, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland, Hungary and Austria. We use Trainline to book our European trains where possible, as it is exceptionally user friendly and covers most train services throughout Europe.
Ferry – For visits to coastal destinations, getting the ferry into Croatia can be a fun experience. The main ferries operating to and from Croatian shores are from Italy and include ferries from Venice to the north coastline of Croatia, ferries from Cesenatico and Pesaro to the mid to north coastline of Croatia, ferries from Ancona to the mid coastline and islands of Croatia and ferries from Bari to Dubrovnik. We always use FerryHopper to book our ferries where possible, as they cover many routes across Europe and have a really useful website, including a handy map of all the available ferry routes
Useful tips for getting around Croatia
Croatia is a beautiful country and exploring it is worthwhile. Below are some of our top tips for getting around the country with various types of transport:
Trains – Trains in Croatia aren’t particularly useful. They do exist but you won’t find many people using them outside of Zagreb or for international travel. Any locals that we spoke to told us that trains are rarely used and the network hasn’t been upgraded in a long time. As a result, trains are slow in Croatia and journeys that would take 4 hours by bus will take 6 hours by train so, although we prefer trains to buses, we would not advise using them in Croatia.
Bus – Buses are the most inexpensive way to get around Croatia via public transport. Buses connect most towns and cities and are generally safe and reliable. Most bus drivers speak English and will be happy to help you if you ask. You can check bus timetables for services across the country here
Car – Driving is a good way to get around Croatia if you want to explore areas that are off the beaten track or don’t want to rely on public transport and connections. The roads in Croatia are generally of a good standard and there are motorways connecting the majority of major cities. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Croatia and everyone in the car is required, by law, to wear a seatbelt. The speed limit on motorways is 130 kph
Ferry – Ferries are a great way to get around the coastal regions of Croatia and between islands. You can get between the majority of islands and coastal towns via ferries, however, there is no direct ferry that goes from the north or central coastal areas or islands to Dubrovnik, making this route necessary by a combination of ferry and bus or car
Domestic flights – Internal domestic flights in Croatia connect the majority of major cities to Zagreb with daily flights. However, there are gaps when it comes to connecting other cities throughout the country to each other, so relying solely on domestic flights isn’t always possible if you’re wanting to travel around Croatia. Check Skyscanner to see domestic flight options
